'Voices From The Past' Vol. 1 — November 9
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.—Psalm 55:22
If God is once our God, he is so forever (Psa. 48:14). He is ours from everlasting in election to everlasting in glory. And so we shall ever be with the Lord. Let us improve our interest in him and cast all of our burdens upon him—our fears, our needs and our sins. Christian, what troubles you? You have a God to pardon your sins and to supply your needs, therefore, roll your burden on him (1 Pet. 5:7). If we have God to be our God, we may be content 'having nothing, and yet possessing all things' (2 Cor. 6: 10). Those who have a covenant union with God may be filled with contentment of spirit, for God is a rich blessing to the soul. He is a sufficient good. He who has God has enough. He is not only a full vessel but a spring. God is an infinite fullness. Other things can no more fill the soul than a mariner's breath can fill the sails. He sanctifies all of our blessings—our health is blessed, our estate is blessed, and all of our crosses are blessed. In giving us himself he gives us the crowning blessing. In God's character there is a sweetness that fascinates and enraptures the soul, 'at your right hand are pleasures' (Psa. 16:11). If God is our God let it cheer and revive us in all conditions. To be content with God is not enough, but to be cheerful. What greater cordial can we have than union with deity? Who should rejoice, but those who have an infinite, all-sufficient, eternal God to be their portion, and who are as rich as heaven can make them? Let us break forth into praise. O infinite, astonishing mercy, that God should take dust and ashes into so near a bond of love as to be our God! Let us live as those who have God as their own, and walk in holy lives, that others may see there is something of God in us.
