'Voices From The Past' Vol. 1 — February 9

Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.—Matthew 11:28

God is the only rock on which we may rest safe in times of danger. Trusting in him brings peace in every circumstance. God has set apart his grace for this purpose. It is the grace of the new covenant, the grace of all graces, which comforts the soul when it is disturbed. The same love that brings you everlasting life will also give you daily bread. You may trust in God for provision, for protection, and for whatsoever you want. When you find yourself in a troubled state, there is always something in God for your comfort. If we are in trouble, there is an appropriate comfort given. Are we sick? He is our health. Are we weak? He is our strength. Are we dead? He is our life. It is not possible to be in any state, ever so miserable, but there is something in God to comfort us. God is called in Scripture a rock, a castle, and a shield. He is a rock to build upon, a castle for safety, and a shield to defend us in all times of danger. If God so comforts us by these, how much more in himself? I beseech you to consider God as your 'very great reward' (Gen. 15:1). God is bread to strengthen us, and the Spirit of all comfort. Can a castle or a shield keep a man safe in the time of danger? How much more can God! Consider how safe Noah was when the ark was afloat, and why? Because God shut the door behind him and kept him there. You see, there is something in God for every malady; so then trust in God. This is the way to quiet our souls. Our soul will find joy, and care, and trust when it comes to him and makes God its stay. The compass rests when it comes to the north pole, and the ark rested when it came to Mount Ararat, so the soul rests safe when it comes to God, and till that time, it moves as the ark upon the waters.
